Chicken Road game explained: lanes, odds and when to cash out
Chicken Road is a crossing game. You place a stake and move a chicken across a busy road one lane at a time. Every lane you clear raises the multiplier, and you can cash out whenever you like. If a car hits the chicken first, the round ends and the stake is lost. In Chicken Road 2, our free version on Loot Yeti, every lane is worth 95.5% of the stake on average before cent rounding and the max-win cap. The cap matters more than most players expect, so this guide works out the real return at a real stake too.
How does a crossing game like Chicken Road work?
A crossing game is a close cousin of a crash game. In a crash game the multiplier climbs on a timer and you race it. In Chicken Road the multiplier moves only when you hop: waiting changes neither the lane nor the multiplier. The decision is the same, though: hop again, or take the money and stop.
- Set a stake. In Chicken Road 2 it runs from 0.12 to 200.00 in play money.
- Pick a risk level: Easy, Medium, Hard or Expert.
- Hop one lane at a time. Each safe lane raises the multiplier.
- Cash out to collect the stake times the current multiplier, or keep going.
- If a car hits the chicken, you lose the stake. Reaching the far side pays the top multiplier, and a round whose payout reaches 20,000.00 cashes out there by itself.
The lane where the car will hit is fixed the moment you place the stake. Tapping fast or slow does not move it.
How do the Chicken Road risk levels differ?
Riskier roads are shorter, but each lane pays more and is harder to clear. The table shows the multiplier and your chance of getting that far, for a few lanes on each road. The last column is the far side as the multiplier table has it, before the max-win cap.
| Risk level | Lanes | Lane 1 | Lane 5 | Lane 10 | Far side, uncapped |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 30 | 1.01× · 94.6% | 1.15× · 83.0% | 1.42× · 67.3% | 23.24× · 1 in 24 |
| Medium | 25 | 1.08× · 88.4% | 1.78× · 53.7% | 3.85× · 24.8% | 2,457× · 1 in 2,573 |
| Hard | 22 | 1.18× · 80.9% | 2.95× · 32.4% | 12.52× · 7.6% | 62,162.09× · 1 in 65,091 |
| Expert | 18 | 1.44× · 66.3% | 9.09× · 10.5% | 185.08× · 0.5% | 3,608,855.25× · 1 in 3,778,906 |
Read a cell as "multiplier · chance of reaching it". On Medium, lane 5 pays 1.78× and you get there 53.7% of the time.
The cap decides where a round can really end. At the default stake of 0.50, this is where a round that never cashes out stops, what it pays and how often you get there:
| Risk level | Ends at lane | Pays | Chance | Average return |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Easy | 30 of 30 | 11.62 | 4.1% | 95.5% |
| Medium | 25 of 25 | 1,228.50 | 1 in 2,573 | 95.5% |
| Hard | 22 of 22 | 20,000.00 | 1 in 65,091 | 61.5% |
| Expert | 16 of 18 | 20,000.00 | 1 in 75,846 | 52.7% |
So the 2,457× far side of Medium is reachable at this stake, in about 1 in 2,573 rounds. On Expert, the round cashes out by itself at lane 16, and riding it that far returns only 52.7% on average.
What are the odds of crossing each lane?
In Chicken Road 2, the chance of getting through lane k is the RTP, 95.5%, divided by lane k's multiplier. On Hard, lane 3 pays 1.83×, so you get through it 52.2% of the time. Lane 10 pays 12.52×, so you get that far 7.6% of the time.
Multiply any lane's chance by its multiplier and you get 95.5%. So, before rounding and the cap, cashing out at any lane returns 95.5% of the stake on average, and the house edge is 4.5%.
The first lane is the safest step on every road, and it is still not free. On Easy, the first lane pays 1.01× and fails 5.4% of the time. On Expert, it pays 1.44× and fails 33.7% of the time.
These chances do not depend on your stake. Only the payout does: it is rounded to the cent and capped.
When should you cash out in Chicken Road?
Below the cap, the math has a plain answer: on average it does not matter. Every lane returns about 95.5%. What changes is the shape of your results. At the default stake of 0.50:
- Cash out early and you win often, but small. On Medium, stopping at lane 1 wins 88.4% of rounds at 1.08×, an average return of 95.5% after rounding.
- Cash out late and you win rarely, but big. On Medium, stopping at lane 10 wins 24.8% of rounds at 3.85×, an average return of 95.7%.
- Near the cap it does matter. A round that reaches 20,000.00 is paid the cap, not the full multiplier, so aiming for lanes past it costs you. On Expert at this stake, that cuts the return to 52.7%.
Auto mode makes this concrete: set Steps to the lane you want, and every round cashes out there by itself. If someone sells a system for picking the perfect lane, the formula above is why it cannot beat the game.
Is there a limit to what one round can win?
Yes. One round of Chicken Road 2 can win at most 20,000.00 in play money, and a round whose payout reaches the cap cashes out by itself at exactly the cap. At the largest stake, 200.00, that happens at any multiplier of 100× or more.
Bigger stakes reach the cap sooner. At 200.00 on Medium, the round ends at lane 22 of 25, paying 20,000.00. Riding that far returns 69.4% on average, well under the nominal 95.5%.
Is Chicken Road rigged?
A crossing game is only fair if the crash lane is fixed before you start and cannot be moved once you are winning. Chicken Road 2 is provably fair: the crash lane comes from HMAC-SHA256 of a server seed, your client seed and a round counter, all set when you place the stake.
Before the round you can see a SHA-256 hash of the server seed. After the round, My bet history reveals the seed and checks it against the hash. Replaying the seeds and the risk level gives the crash lane, which proves the round. The provably fair guide works through a real Chicken Road 2 round, lane by lane.
